Welcome to the twenty-second of my 30 daily tips on Health!
We need to replace sharing our grief with sharing our love.
Let’s say someone tells you a person has cancer (or any life threatening disease)and you can tell it bothers them on a personal level.
Then your mind goes to your own personal experiences. Or worse, to horror stories you’ve heard. Not too cheery, right? And not exactly what people need to hear or feel at this point in their lives.
Some people don’t realize that what they consider “sharing” may be causing others needless pain.
Although it may not seem like it, it is how some people share their grief. They think that sharing it will in some way alleviate it. But all it does is reinforce their hopeless/helpless situation with each telling of the story.
How can you help them?
One way is to change the subject or say something like “That’s too bad (at the very beginning of their story), but let me tell you about…” And tell them a good thing that has happened to someone going through a similar experience.
This could be your way of helping the next cancer patient, who may be listening, have hope. Showing by sharing is excellent.
We need to experience the goodness of sharing our love, not our grief.
Thank you for reading.
P.S. All said, though, there is a time and a place for everything. You’ll have to be the judge of the right time to step in and make changes.
